Simbang Gabi sa Konsulado 2015

Photo credit Kabayan Restaurant 49-12 Queens Blvd, Queens, NY 11377

Simbang gabi sa konsulado Dec 7th- 15th, 6:30pm weekdays and 3pm weekends at Kalayaan Hall Philippine Center 556 Fifth Ave. New York NY.

What is Simbang Gabi? Simbang Gabi has become one of the most popular traditions in the Philippines during Christmas season. But it is not just a tradition that is celebrated because we need to do so. It is a significant moment not only because it strengthens relationships among family and friends but also because it is the time where our faith is intensified. This is the time where we mostly feel the presence of the Lord because it is the spiritual preparation for Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ. For Filipino Catholics, Simbang Gabi is above all an expression of their filial devotion to Mary, the Mother of God. For nine consecutive days, they join and accompany her, so to speak, as she awaits the birth of her Son. For this reason, the Masses on these days are celebrated as solemn votive Masses in her honor. It does not matter if one has the stamina to complete the novena or not, what really matters is what is inside the heart. The blessing does not depend on the number of mass attended, but what is important is the disposition of the person who receives the Lord’s blessing.

As we all know, any Filipino event or gathering is not complete without delicious food and Simbang Gabi is not an excuse for a mouth-watering array of Pinoy delicacies to warm the hands and stomachs of churchgoers. The most popular foods during Simbang Gabi are puto bumbong and bibingka. These two Filipino rice cakes are always available during Christmas season. You can get bibingka which is freshly cooked between hot coals. Each bibingka may include a tiny slice of cheese and salted egg. Yum! Puto bumbong is another snack associated with Christmas. It is made of glutinous rice and is steamed in a small bamboo tube. It is purple in color so you won’t have any trouble distinguishing it from other rice cakes. When serving, melted butter is spread on the puto bumbong with freshly grated coconut and brown sugar.

It’s great that Filipinos living in New York are keeping this tradition alive every year. Let’s make Christmas Merry to all! Mabuhay!!!

Three Reasons to Fall in Love this November

1. Fall foliage - November is as beautiful a month as any. It's only a matter of time before the trees are fully bare, which means plenty of crunchy leaves to step on and endless opportunities for pics of colorful leaf-lined paths. The fact that the weather is getting colder only serves as more of a reason to sip on hot drinks and bundle up in cozy sweaters, and a lot of cuddling.

2. Thanksgiving - What's not to love? Food, family, festivities..

3. December is Right Around the Corner - I know, I know. This is a list of reasons why November rocks, not December. But there's something about November is great because it is festive without being too much. All of that hustle and bustle is just few days ahead, so there is no need to feel like you are running out of time. Take everything in and get excited about the little things, like the very first snowfall of the year, decorate Christmas tree together, go to Xmas bazaars and have apple cider or hot choco or just stroll along Hudson river or in the parks. It's nice to simply relax and enjoy the anticipation together.

Travel Like A Speedy Newyorkers. How to Make Quick Trips Through Airport Security?

As a busy New Yorker, you don’t have time to waste in long lines at the airport. Even when you’re traveling for pleasure, detours at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints can bottleneck your itinerary. But by following a few simple tips your trips through airport security will be as fast and smooth as possible.

Dress to impress the metal detectors. Leave your loose change and heavy jewelry at home, and slip your keys into your carry-on bag before approaching security. Adults must remove their shoes; wear a pair that’s easy to slip off—and don’t forget your socks.

Travel-size your toiletries. If you need to carry on shampoo, aerosols, lotions or other personal items, pay attention to TSA guidelines: All such liquids must be in a 3.4-ounce container (or smaller), and all your containers must fit into one sealed, 1-quart clear zip-top bag.

Keep your carry-on organized. Your laptop will be screened separately, so make sure you can quickly slip it out. And try to tame your collection of phone chargers by neatly wrapping cords so they aren’t loose in your bag.

Seen a bald eagle in the street of New York.

After my weekly routine run in Central Park I spotted an American bald eagle in the tree along 5th Ave just about 10 ft high above the ground. The bald eagle is the only eagle unique to North America. Its distinctive brown body and white head and tail make it easy to identify even from a distance.

Comparing Different Asian Countries Cultural Festival in NY/NJ

Nothing could be more Filipino than a festival that showcases a wide variety of cultural activities like ethnic dances, costume outfit, food, dialects, jokes and many more. This Fiestahan in America is a gathering of all Filipinos living in the east coast who came from different provinces in the Philippines to get together in one community spirit and discovery of each culture. The Fiestahan embodies the region’s unity in diversity and celebrates the rich and diverse cultures, bringing together time-honored traditions and modern creativity

The Fiestahan offers snapshots of a community’s identity and of the region as a whole, providing an opportunity to revitalize cultural practices, and serving as a creative platform to showcase their favorite cultural expressions to the Filipino-American community. The Fiestahan promotes inter-provinces dialogue, enhancing understanding through shared experience

The Fiestahan will help to promote the conservation and preservation of Philippine cultural heritage to ensure its continuity in enhancing awareness and understanding of the people about the unique history of the region and the cultural similarities and differences between and amongst Filipinos living in America. This will also protect the distinctiveness of Philippine cultural heritage as a whole, and to held branding Filipinos through its appealing to young Fil-am generations.

Cultural festivities need not be expensive but rather be open to public for free just like all other Asian countries festivals in the area. Many Filipinos have brought their concern to us with this expensive entrance fee to attend and mingle with fellow Filipinos living in New York and New Jersey.

One Day Sightseeing Tour in New York City

If you only have one day to spend in New York City, what would you do?
I would start 7am breakfast at Murray's Bagels then head to Times Square to get free visitor's pass and discount cards. Then take any sightseeing loop tour (hoop on/hoop off) bus like Grayline, Circle Tour, etc. I will ride all the way to Lower Manhattan. Do the 9/11 World Trade Center site and Wall Street. Don't pay money or wait in line for the 9/11 Museum. Just go to the area to see the pools of water where the buildings once stood.
Then go to the very tip/bottom of Manhattan near Battery Park for the Staten Island ferry which passes by the Statue of Liberty. Don't pay money to wait in a long line to go over to see the statue. As others said, take a ride on the (free) Staten Island Ferry from the bottom of Manhattan near Battery Park. The ferry will pass close enough to the statue that you can take a photo. The ferry ride is 30 minutes each direction, so the ride will take one hour.
After all that, hoop on the loop bus to north and get off at Herald Square/34th Street to see the Empire State building, Macy's and KoreaTown. Empire State bldg is obviously 'iconic' and very famous. However, very long lines/very long wait to see the top. I recommend you go to see the outside of the bldg only, and inside the lobby to take photos. But don't go to the top.
As others said, Top of the Rock, (or the top of Rockefeller Center) has shorter lines and in addition, you can see the Empire State bldg FROM Top of the Rock. You obviously can't see the Empire State bldg if you are inside it. ;-) So in some ways you get a better view (i.e., of the Empire State bldg) from inside Top of the Rock.
Then return to the loop line and travel 'Uptown' or North to Grand Central the oldest terminal in America then to Rockefeller Center 47th St to go to the Top of the Rock observatory inside Rockefeller Center.
After that, eat some pizza for lunch and walk towards the 5th avenue Philippine Center, St Patrick Cathedral and to the bottom of Central Park, which begins at 59th Street or Apple Glass Cube store and take some pictures. Walk right at the corner entrance of Central Park to the The Pond, The Mall & Literacy walk to the Bethesda Terrace . Here is the link to some sites to see in the park Central Park Attractions.
Around 6pm start walking south along Broadway towards Times Square. You may want to stop by MOMA Museum of Moving Arts.
Times Square...obviously a symbol of NYC. I recommend you go at night to see the lights and take some pictures. There is really nothing much to see in Times Square and it is very crowded with tourists. But I understand if you have never been there, it is good to take a photo so you can say you have been there. Regarding Madam Tussauds, you can see wax figures anywhere in the world, so I do not recommend you waste your time there.
That should be enough to fill your day along with walking and stopping to eat....
For dinner, you can check Yelp for some restaurant recommendations around Times Square district. I would definitely try checking Bubba GumpIppudo RamenCarmine’sShake Shack (#1 burger in NYC), Gallaghers Steakhouse or Mastro’s SteakhouseJunior’s Restaurant for dessert, Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ, for happy hour try Sake Bar HagiBeer CultureBeer AuthorityThe New York Beer Company or The House of Brews.
I think that's about it! You've made your one day stop-over trip in New York. Have a safe trip to your next destination. You can follow me or maybe ask me some questions about your visit to New York or your other travel plans at my Tripadvisor or Twitter/robertbacaycay. Bon voyage kabayan!!!!

Big Apple Welcomes Pinoy Calamansi

The Philippine citrus calamansi (kalamansi) has been introduced to mainstream America, bolstering hope that it will become a staple in kitchens with it's first stop in New York City. Nicknamed the Philippine Lemon or Golden Lime, the calamansi is regarded as the country’s best kept secretUnlike the United States, lemons and oranges are not commonplace in the Philippines which makes the calamansi the go-to citrus fruit in the country for drinking, cooking and even traditionally known as an immunity booster. Calamansi is a tropical lime native to the Philippines and some Southeast Asian countries. It belongs to the citrofortunella species, which is a hybrid between the citrus and Fortunella genus. Calamansi is cultivated for its edible but incredibly sour fruit. The fruit shares similar properties to lemon and lime. In the Philippines and other Asian countries, calamansi is often used as ingredient in dipping sauces.

Just like all citrus fruits, calamansi is loaded with vitamin C. It’s also traditionally used as treatment for certain diseases. In today’s post, we are listing down the health benefits and practical uses of calamansi juice.

Advice to all husbands who do not want to lose their wives (and vice versa)

Having read this article from vamshare.com made me realize how bad I was as a husband to my ex. As I sat and thought about it, I remembered my ex didn’t display the same behavior towards me. I even thought about some of the times I really did make mistakes. So is she just a better person than me? Why doesn’t she bite my head off when I don’t do things the way she likes?

It takes two to make a partnership. No one is always right and no one is always wrong. And I'm not always going to see eye-to-eye on every little thing. It doesn’t make me smarter, or superior, or more right to point out every little thing she does that’s not to my liking. I guess I just have to love her the way she is and the way she is not.

This article was written not by a relationship expert, but by a divorced man named Gerald Rogers, who wished he could have received this advice before losing the woman that he loved, and his marriage of almost 16 years.

A Divorced Man Wrote These 20 Epic Marriage Advice He Wished He Could Have Had. A Must

1. NEVER STOP COURTING. NEVER STOP DATING. NEVER EVER take that woman for granted. When you asked her to marry you, you promised to be that man that would OWN HER HEART and to fiercely protect it. This is the most important and sacred treasure you will ever be entrusted with. SHE CHOSE YOU. Never forget that, and NEVER GET LAZY in your love.

2. PROTECT YOUR OWN HEART. Just as you committed to being the protector of her heart, you must guard your own with the same vigilance. Love yourself fully, love the world openly, but there is a special place in your heart where no one must enter except for your wife. Keep that space always ready to receive her and invite her in, and refuse to let anyone or anything else enter there.

3. FALL IN LOVE OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. You will constantly change. You’re not the same people you were when you got married, and in five years you will not be the same person you are today. Change will come, and in that you have to re-choose each other everyday. SHE DOESN’T HAVE TO STAY WITH YOU, and if you don’t take care of her heart, she may give that heart to someone else or seal you out completely, and you may never be able to get it back. Always fight to win her love just as you did when you were courting her.

4. ALWAYS SEE THE BEST IN HER. Focus only on what you love. What you focus on will expand. If you focus on what bugs you, all you will see is reasons to be bugged. If you focus on what you love, you can’t help but be consumed by love. Focus to the point where you can no longer see anything but love, and you know without a doubt that you are the luckiest man on earth to have this woman as your wife.

5. IT’S NOT YOUR JOB TO CHANGE OR FIX HER. Your job is to love her as she is with no expectation of her ever changing. And if she changes, love what she becomes, whether it’s what you wanted or not.

6. TAKE FULL ACCOUNTABILITY. Take full accountability for your own emotions. It’s not your wife’s job to make you happy, and she CAN’T make you sad. You are responsible for finding your own happiness, and through that your joy will spill over into your relationship and your love.

7. NEVER BLAME HER IF YOU GET ANGRY. NEVER BLAME your wife If YOU get frustrated or angry at her, it is only because it is triggering something inside of YOU. They are YOUR emotions, and your responsibility. When you feel those feelings take time to get present and to look within and understand what it is inside of YOU that is asking to be healed. You were attracted to this woman because she was the person best suited to trigger all of your childhood wounds in the most painful way so that you could heal them: when you heal yourself, you will no longer be triggered by her, and you will wonder why you ever were.

8. ALLOW YOUR WOMAN TO JUST BE. When she’s sad or upset, it’s not your job to fix it, it’s your job to HOLD HER and let her know it’s ok. Let her know that you hear her, and that she’s important and that you are that pillar on which she can always lean. The feminine spirit is about change and emotion and like a storm her emotions will roll in and out, and as you remain strong and unjudging she will trust you and open her soul to you: DON’T RUN-AWAY WHEN SHE’S UPSET. Stand present and strong and let her know you aren’t going anywhere. Listen to what she is really saying behind the words and emotion.

9. BE SILLY. Don’t take yourself so damn seriously. Laugh. And make her laugh. Laughter makes everything else easier.

10. FILL HER SOUL EVERYDAY: Learn her love languages and the specific ways that she feels important and validated and CHERISHED. Ask her to create a list of
10 THINGS that make her feel loved and memorize those things and make it a priority everyday to make her feel like a queen.

11. BE PRESENT. Give her not only your time, but your focus, your attention and your soul. Do whatever it takes to clear your head so that when you are with her you are fully WITH HER. Treat her as you would your most valuable client. She is.

12. BE WILLING TO TAKE HER SEXUALLY. To carry her away in the power of your masculine presence, to consume her and devour her with your strength, and to penetrate her to the deepest levels of her soul. Let her melt into her feminine softness as she knows she can trust you fully.

13. DON’T BE AN IDIOT. Don’t be an idiot and don’t be afraid of being one either. You will make mistakes and so will she. Try not to make too big of mistakes, and learn from the ones you do make. You’re not supposed to be perfect, just try to not be too stupid.

14. GIVE HER SPACE. The woman is so good at giving and giving, and sometimes she will need to be reminded to take time to nurture herself. Sometimes she will need to fly from your branches to go and find what feeds her soul, and if you give her that space she will come back with new songs to sing:. (okay, getting a little too poetic here, but you get the point. Tell her to take time for herself, ESPECIALLY after you have kids. She needs that space to renew and get re-centered, and to find herself after she gets lost in serving you, the kids and the world.)

15. BE VULNERABLE. You don’t have to have it all together. Be willing to share your fears and feelings, and quick to acknowledge your mistakes.

16. BE FULLY TRANSPARENT. If you want to have trust,  you must be willing to share EVERYTHING: Especially those things you don’t want to share. It takes courage to fully love, to fully open your heart and let her in when you don’t know i she will like what she finds… Part of that courage is allowing her to love you completely, your darkness as well as your light. DROP THE MASK: If you feel like you need to wear a mask around her, and show up perfect all the time, you will never experience the full dimension of what love can be.

17. NEVER STOP GROWING TOGETHER. The stagnant pond breeds malaria, the flowing stream is always fresh and cool. Atrophy is the natural process when you stop working a muscle, just as it is if you stop working on your relationship. Find common goals, dreams and visions to work towards.

18. DON’T WORRY ABOUT MONEY. Money is a game, find ways to work together as a team to win it. It never helps when teammates fight. Figure out ways to leverage both persons strength to win.

19. FORGIVE IMMEDIATELY. Forgive immediately and focus on the future rather than carrying weight from the past. Don’t let your history hold you hostage. Holding onto past mistakes that either you or she makes, is like a heavy anchor to your marriage and will hold you back. FORGIVENESS IS FREEDOM. Cut the anchor loose and always choose love.

20. ALWAYS CHOOSE LOVE. ALWAYS CHOOSE LOVE… In the end, this is the only advice you need. If this is the guiding principle through which all your choices is governed, there is nothing that will threaten the happiness of your marriage. Love will always endure.

Interesting Facts About New York

Filipinos in New York love to think they know everything about their city — where to find the best street-meat cart, how to avoid paying full price at museums, what route to take to skip traffic down Broadway. But New York City can reveal new treasures to even its most grizzled veterans. Beyond the city where we work, eat, play and commute every day lies a hidden New York: mysterious, forgotten, abandoned or just overlooked. I've compiled some of the hidden secrets of NYC.
New York is a large place with many things to do and it has a rich history which make it a great place to learn about and learn from. Before New York was a colony the area was in fact inhabited by two native cultures, the Iroquoian and the Algonquian people. Since the French first found the New York area in 1524 it has played a pivotal role in the history of the United States. Here are some facts about New York that we’re sure you’ll find interesting.

Crispy Pata & Fried Rice Top 11 Best Breakfast in NYC 2015

Philippine traditional Crispy Pata (crispy pig knuckle) & Garlic Fried Rice was voted by NY's Village Voice as one of Top 11 Best Breakfast in NYC 2015. http://ht.ly/MUsW5

What is Crispy Pata?

Crispy Pata is a Filipino dish that is essentially deep-fried pig knuckles, though it involves cooking more than just the knuckles. The entire rear leg of a pig is boiled in water with some spices until it is tender. The meat is then cooled completely and deep fried until the skin becomes very crispy. The seemingly simple cooking process, however, is laden with some techniques that ultimately might prove very dangerous. Traditionally, the leg, or pata, is served with a dipping sauce made from soy sauce and vinegar with some hot chili peppers thrown in for heat.

The first step in the preparation of crispy pata is to boil the whole pig’s leg in water. The water is usually spiced with salt, peppercorns, an onion and bay leaves. Other additions to the boiling liquid are fish sauce for taste, garlic and, sometimes, star anise.

Two other ingredients can be added to the water to help tenderize the meat. The first is baking soda. The second, less traditional tenderizer is soda. Adding soda tenderizes the meat because of the high acidity of the liquid while also providing flavor in the form of the sugars in the drink. Still, there is no real reason to add any tenderizing agent to the water except to decrease the amount of time the meat has to boil.

Once the crispy pata has been boiled, it is allowed to cool completely. This can be done by draining and then refrigerating the leg, or the leg can be left to sit overnight. A third method involves freezing the leg, encouraging the formation of water crystals inside the meat and skin. These methods allow the gelatin inside the leg to cool and set, preventing it from spilling into the frying oil and making the meat tough. The cooling time also gives the skin time to lose any water absorbed during boiling, helping the crispy pata to develop dry, crunchy skin.

The cooled, dried leg is finally deep fried. This is a dangerous procedure that can be further complicated by the cooling method used. The cartilage and other structures inside the pig’s leg are going to release liquid into the oil that will cause it to splatter; this is unavoidable. If the leg is frozen, as some recipes call for, then the splatter from the hot oil will be completely uncontrollable and potentially hazardous. It is best to use a pot with a lid to deep fry the crispy pata, or to perform the cooking outdoors.

Once the skin has become crunchy, the crispy pata can be taken out of the oil, drained and is ready to serve. It is traditional to make a dipping sauce from soy sauce, vinegar, onions, chili peppers and garlic, although nearly any vinegar-based sauce can be used. The leg can be carved before being served, or can be presented whole for guests to carve themselves.

BEFORE & AFTER PICS

Panic buying in NY

Millions of people in New York East Coast are bracing for Winter Storm Juno, which will become a major snowstorm today through Wednesday with the potential for blizzard conditions and expecting 2-3 feet of snow.

NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a press conference Sunday, "This could be the biggest snowstorm in the history of NYC. Prepare for the worst than what you have ever seen.” The National Weather Service (NWS) and Weather Channel meteorologist Chris Dolce have both said the impending storm is “potentially historic." States of emergency have been declared in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. All NYC Subway, Metro North, Long Island Railroad, and MTA Bus service will be suspended effective 11:00 PM. All non-emergency vehicles are banned from New York City streets starting at 11pm ET Monday. Most major bridges in and out of New York City will be closed beginning at 11 p.m. ET. As of this update, the Verrazano Narrows Bridge is not among the bridges to be closed. New York City public schools, Postal offices and other Federal/Local offices are closed Tuesday.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said the Sanitation Department had scheduled 12-hour shifts, with 2,400 employees on each shift, working from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Nearly 500 salt spreaders will go out before the snow. After two inches of snow have fallen, the city will deploy plows to clear about 6,000 miles of road (that's the distance from New York to Los Angeles back and fort) The sanitation commissioner, Kathryn Garcia, said that 2,000 plows from her agency would be available, along with 242 from other agencies. In other preparations, nearly 500 Department of Transportation workers began treating bridges and overpasses, and emergency crews filled more than 1,000 potholes. And the city’s Office of Emergency Management was coordinating with dozens of local, state and federal agencies.

From New York City to Boston, the heaviest snow and wind will occur from Monday 10pm to Tuesday afternoon with 2"-4" of snow per hour rate.  A 250-mile stretch of the Northeast, home to more than 28 million people, is under a blizzard warning, and another 12 million people are under a winter storm warning. Airlines have cancelled more than 7,000 flights for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Juno was named by the winter storm naming committee at The Weather Channel on Sunday morning. The name Juno is from Roman mythology, a goddess who looked after the women of Rome.gy, a goddess who looked after the women of Rome.
