The museums and historic landmarks of Lower Manhattan are an American treasure. Explore one of the most diverse and concentrated groups of museums in the world.

Spend a summer evening surrounded by personal artifacts, interactive design, and dramatic historic sites – all within comfortable walking distance of each other.

African Burial Ground National Monument, part of the National Park Service, is the first national monument dedicated to Africans of early New York and Americans of African descent. It began use in the 17th or 18th century, but was only rediscovered in the past 20 years. The story is both of the Africans whose holy place this was, but also the story of the modern day New Yorkers who fought to honor these ancestors.

Tour the museum, rangers will be on hand to answer questions and make periodic presentations. View the film “Our Time At Last” details the history of the AFB from its creation through its rediscovery to its designation as a national park.

The Anne Frank Center USA, a partner of the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, educates and inspires visitors through the diary, spirit, and legacy of Anne Frank. A permanent exhibition enables visitors to learn about Anne’s world in hiding and her incredible optimism despite the chaos that was around her. Also on display are facsimiles of her famous diary, family photos, and other artifacts from the Holocaust.

At 26 Wall Street, George Washington took the oath of office as our first President, and this site was home to the first Congress, Supreme Court, and Executive Branch offices. The current structure, a Customs House, later served as part of the US Sub-Treasury. Now, Federal Hall National Memorial serves as a museum and memorial to our first President and the beginnings of the United States of America. Exhibits present the history of Federal Hall and artifacts on view include the Bible that George Washington used at his inauguration. National Park Service Ranger-led tours will be offered on the hour from 4 to 7 p.m.

The Museum of American Finance is the nation’s only independent museum dedicated to American finance and financial history. An affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, the Museum offers permanent exhibits on the financial markets, money, banking, entrepreneurship and Alexander Hamilton, as well as topical rotating exhibits.

Special Programming
In addition to the permanent exhibits, special exhibits include The Fed at 100, which illuminates the complex workings of the nation’s central bank and the pivotal role it has played throughout the history of American finance. Also on view is a jewel-encrusted 18-karat gold Monopoly set.

Explore modern Jewish history, life, and culture in the Museum’s unique Core Exhibition and award-winning special exhibitions, where you can learn about the broad tapestry of Jewish life in the 20th and 21st centuries through first-person histories and personal objects—before, during, and after the Holocaust. Special exhibitions on view are: Against the Odds: American Jews & the Rescue of Europe’s Refugees, 1933-1941, and A Town Known as Auschwitz: The Life and Death of a Jewish Community.

Other features of the Museum include Voices of Liberty, a soundscape of inspiring stories of immigration in a gallery with a spectacular view of the Statue of Liberty. Andy Goldsworthy’s Garden of Stones, an outdoor contemplative space, is his only permanent installation in New York City.

Guided tours of the Museum’s Core Exhibition, about Jewish heritage, the Holocaust, and Jewish renewal, will begin on the hour from 4 to 7 p.m.

Connect with history in the National Archives’ Learning Center to discover and uncover the many national treasures of New York. You can go on an Archival Adventure and pull archival facsimile treasures off the shelves. At the Welcome Center, view famous signatures and other original records. Begin your journey into family history research/genealogy in the Research Center by exploring immigrant arrivals (including Ellis Island), Federal census and naturalization (citizenship) records, plus so much more.


Special Programming
Meet the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt as portrayed by James Foote, as well as participate in family activities, document discoveries, family history research, and more. Hear “The Life of Theodore Roosevelt” talk at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. All visitors to the 3rd floor Learning Center will receive a free “national treasure” giveaway.

Created by the September 11th Families Association, the 9/11 Tribute Center offers visitors a place where they can connect with people from the 9/11 community including survivors, family members, rescuers and first responders. Visitors learn about 9/11 through personal stories told by those who were there. From tragedy to survival to rebuilding, the visit connects people to the unforgettable experiences of our community.

The Municipal Archives Visitor Center, located in a stunning Beaux Arts building, holds New York City Government’s historical records beginning with documents deeding land to the earliest Dutch settlers to the records of former Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. The remarkable holdings include early maps of the City, the drawings for the Brooklyn Bridge, designs for Central Park, and other municipal records.

Building on the theme of the River To River Festival, for one night only, see rare drawings and maps of Lower Manhattan. The exhibit will include maps, drawings, and photographs of New York City from the Hudson River to the East River highlighting early plans for such iconic spots as City Hall Park and Brooklyn Bridge.
